What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? Il y en a beaucoup, mais les fêtes de Noël et les tournois de golf annuels sont toujours des moments de l'année que mes collègues et moi adorons.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? The best part is the many great friends I have met at Sobeys.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Getting the position of Meat Manager at the new Sobeys Extra store. Starting from scratch with a brand new store to the grand opening was exciting, and a feather in my cap. I learned a lot.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? My favourite memory was meeting my wife while working at Sobeys; we both still work for Sobeys.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Don't be afraid to ask for help and to learn new things. Be outgoing with customers and show interest in them.
My Sobeys isbusy -- it's a lot of hustle and bustle, there's always so much to do. And it's fun!
Robert Allsop

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? Sobeys has always been a company that provides and encourages an opportunity for advancement, and I'm living proof of that. I've had a new role every few years, and that's what has kept me motivated, knowing that there's always another step.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? When I became Vice President. I started my career here when I was 15 years old and worked my way up through the organization.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? My favourite memory is opening my first store.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Embrace the opportunity, dig deep and challenge yourself to understand what path exists to develop yourself.

What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? Getting to know a customer who was such a good caregiver to the children she worked with; she touched many people in her community.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Learn from your experience and always work together and prosper as a team.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I learned how to use a mop and using the loudspeaker system -- that was frightening at first.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? I have worked with hundreds of dedicated co-workers at stores and in the office, and the best part of Sobeys is always the people.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? These vary depending on the role I was in. It ranges from being complimented for creating an attractive seafood display, to being thanked for a new business plan that will improve a store; that's very rewarding.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Take advantage of career opportunities, respect your co-workers, and always place the customer first.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? My first day on the job was Easter Monday and it was very busy.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The best part of working at Sobeys is the friendships I have made. I have fun every day.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? When our store had a flood we all pulled together as a team. Every employee came to help -- we even had university students come in -- which made it possible for us to reopen in two days, in time for the busy Easter weekend. I was so proud of everyone.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Sobeys is a great company to work for with lots of room for advancement.
My Sobeys is...my second family; I've been with a lot of my co-workers for 25 years.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I was overwhelmed with the amount of produce codes!
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Knowing that each day will offer a new challenge, but also a sense of accomplishment. And I have a lot of family who work in many facets of the company.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? Sobeys provides a lot to the economy in Pictou County, and it is well known in the community for coming to the table to support local organizations.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? Seeing how everyone in the office supported the Humboldt hockey jersey day, even though it was so far away! It was very impactful.
My Sobeys is...an important part of my life, and an extension of my family.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? Dave Sobey visited while I was on a tour of the store with my new manager, and I was so shy I hid behind Mr. Ritchie's back. Mr Sobey said, ?It's alright, you're going to be with us for a long time.? He was beaming, and I felt so special.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The best part would be the many people that I have met along my journey. I think I know people in every store in Halifax and Dartmouth.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? My proudest moment was becoming a baker. Back then it was not a position held by a woman, and my mother was so proud.
My Sobeys is...my second home -- a place where I have made lasting friendships.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I was 14, a shy young kid, and working in the deli got me out of my shell. I started when there was no metric system, no UPC codes, it was a different world. I always liked the interactions with the customers.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Developing other managers, sometimes from 16 years old, you watch them progress. That makes me feel good, it's very satisfying.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? The day that Sobeys gave me a job offer after Commisso's was purchased; I was glowing.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Try to learn something every day. Always be learning.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I remember how friendly, helpful, and welcoming everyone was.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The best part is having the opportunity to work with great people; it's always fun to go to work.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? When my store was named store of the year. I was in my 20s, new to the newly renovated store, and I motivated the team to pull together, despite some skepticism. By the third period we started to think ?we can do this,? and it was rewarding to see them gain that confidence in their skills.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Let your manager know what your career aspirations are so they can support your development.

What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The turning point was when I was a department manager in Bathurst, NB. I remember a feeling of security, and thinking ?I made it.?
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? I have many favourite memories but they all come back to the great people I have worked with.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Work hard, put your hand up for opportunities, ask questions, and above all, allow yourself to risk failure; those are the roads that lead to growth, both personally and professionally.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I was hired to do retail accounting for the Quebec stores because I spoke French. All the last names started with Mac!
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? I enjoy the challenges, the period-end deadlines. I enjoy working to improve processes; it's a big task.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? Raising a family in the community while keeping a full-time job.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? The one constant is the changes. Always get ready to tackle the next challenge.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? There's a lot of opportunity at Sobeys, if you want it, it's there. Work hard and you can stay local and work at Sobeys head office.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? Back then people in Ontario didn't know what Sobeys was -- things have changed!
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? I love that I get to do a lot of different things, bringing together operations, merchandising, even HR, and tying it all together. There are new challenges every day, which makes it interesting.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? My proudest moment was being awarded a gold badge as a grocery manager. Also, I was in Alberta when we bought Safeway, that was exciting. I'm proud to be part of the Sobeys team.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Work hard, then look for the next thing to do, and build a good network of support and friends across many departments.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? It was a busy Friday night on parcel pickup. I mixed up orders and I thought ?with all these mistakes I won't last long.? That was 31 years ago.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Working with my wife and having that under- standing and support; all three of our kids have worked for Sobeys too. It's a family business and it's part of our family's culture too.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? As a store manager we won Store of the Year for our district.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Understand the size of the company and the opportunities that lie within.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? As a truck driver, I am still able to be home every night with my family.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Having my supervisors sup- port me when I wanted to further my training to get my Class 1 driver's licence and then to be able to drive the new trucks.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? Who in the world do you most admire? My dad Bill Coleman. He taught me to drive heavy equipment at age five on the family farm. I got my work ethic from him.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? Being a volunteer firefighter. Sobeys has always supported our fire department fundraisers.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Take any and all courses offered to you so you can advance in the company.

What is the best part of working at Sobeys? When I shared the results of last year's Gain Share and Employee Incentive dollar amounts with my team. We worked so hard for that, it was our best year ever.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? I have been involved in many new grand openings, and after all that hard work it's amazing to see customers excited to get a new store.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? It's a complicated business but it's fun and challenging. Be patient, there's a lot to learn.

What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? The reaction of the staff when we won a Human Sigma Six for employee engagement. Every year we got a little closer, so it was quite an accomplishment and everyone was really excited.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Participate and look at Sobeys as more than a place to work.

What is the best part of working at Sobeys? It was exciting to be part of the grand opening of the Port Hawkesbury, NS, store as Deli Manager.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? The day I turned 40 the bakery was full of balloons and photos of me that the staff got from my mother and sister. I was shocked at first, but it's a fond memory now.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Customers are the Number 1 priority, and they should walk away from every interaction happy and satisfied that they got what they were looking for.

What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The opportunity to work for a great Canadian company in my hometown, and collaborate with people across the country.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? I am proud of my growth into roles of increasing responsibility, thanks to leaders who believed in me, and my skills and abilities. My career development with Sobeys has taken me from accounting to merchandising to HR.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? There are so many. I have friends across the country who are like family to me; the relationship building is what it's all about.

Donald Edwards

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? It was so manual back then, it was challenging to recall the sequences of buttons.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Meeting people. I see lots of suppliers and getting to know and work with them.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? When I was promoted to procurement manager, my first management position in the company. They believed in me and thought I could suc- ceed, that felt really good.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? I enjoyed participating in Lawtons softball tournaments.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Show passion and work ethic and it's rewarded. That has been my experience.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I was surprised at the size of the warehouse and how much food went out every day.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The best part of working at Sobeys is the opportunity for career growth and development.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? I was part of a team that installed a warehouse management system at every warehouse in Canada. It was three years of rewarding work.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? A warehouse employee was struggling professionally and personally, and with some talking and mentoring he turned into a great em- ployee and is still with us 10 years later. There are a few stories like that, and they're always rewarding.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? It was exciting getting to meet everyone, and I had no idea I'd still be here 25 years later, but it has gone by very quickly.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The regular customers. I know their names and they know mine, and they recognize me in whatever department I'm working in. I already know what some of them will order before they ask.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? I love my Home Meal Replacement department, customers love it and because it's the first thing they see, and we get so many compliments.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Treat others the way you'd want to be treated. Enjoy every minute, it's a great experience.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? Meeting and assisting clients in their homes on a daily basis as I deliver and service home health- care equipment.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? I'm proud to be part of a team of skilled and dedicated employees. We all do our best to meet the needs of our clients.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? One of my elderly clients complimented me on how handsome I looked, only to tell me about her cataracts and vision problems a few minutes later.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Do your work to the best of your ability, and treat your co-workers as you would like to be treated.
My Sobeys is...is a company that strives to provide direct services to clients who need accessibility and home health-care equipment.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? My manager was wondering what I was doing, and I had finished the task he gave me and I was onto the next.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The great friends I've made over the years.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? Often being asked to train employees at other stores, and participating in store openings, which I enjoy.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? When I transferred to Stratford, the staff threw a going away party and gave me a going away gift.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? It seems daunting at first, but stick with it and it becomes natural after a while.

What is the best part of working at Sobeys? When my store 552 team won a Store of the Year award.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? It's always been families nurturing families. It's what I've done for 30-plus years with the company.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? Years ago as a junior meat cutter, one of the Sobey family members saw me at the airport in Halifax and remembered my name and I thought, ?Wow, I want to be a people person like that.?
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Be proud of who you are: be yourself, work hard and have fun.
My Sobeys is...my life. I love talking, I love people, I love every opportunity to come closer to them as a family.

What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? There are so many, but the best ones involve team dinners, team parties, and lots and lots of laughs.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Be open to the opportunities around you. Think about what you want to achieve, and know that this is an organization in which you can achieve those dreams.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? My grocery manager was a great mentor; everything he taught me helped me progress.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? Watching employees I have trained reach the next level, I've watched several move up and get promoted, I'm proud to have helped them like others have helped me. It's a two-way street.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? When I was accepted into the Manager in Training program, and then became an assistant manager.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? To be successful, ask a lot of questions, pay attention, and be mindful of their expectations for you.
My Sobeys is...a place where I learn, grow, and provide for my family. It's where I've been my whole career and I'll retire here.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? The best part is the relationships I have cultivated with my co-workers and customers. Because our customers are mostly Orthodox Jews, our food is about 90 per cent kosher and we have rabbis on staff to advise on procedures and preparing food.

What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? I developed a better understanding of Jewish traditions with my first Hanukkah; the food is a little different, but we're all the same.

What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? My proudest moment is when customers recognize me outside of the store, even after many years. We were in Jamaica and a customer recognized me from 20 years ago.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? All the friends I have made with both customers and employees.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? If you like meeting people then you will love being a Sobeys employee. I really connected with people as a cashier, they tell you stories.

What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? Seeing employees I hired reach their personal goals with the company. One produce clerk later became produce manager and then became a store manager.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Work hard and be smart about it -- learn from others who are currently in those roles. There are a lot of really smart, experienced people and they're always willing to help.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? Another rookie and I had to move 2,200 cases of corned beef from a trailer to pallets. It took most of the day.

What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? The Grand Falls warehouse was rebuilt after a fire, and it was a good feeling to walk into that brand new, modern building.
What is your favourite memory from the past 25 years? We had a fundraiser for a co-worker who was travelling to Quebec to see his sick daughter. It was a touching moment when we handed him that envelope; it made me realize that it's more than just work, he's family when you work together so long.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? It was a bit intimidating; I moved from working with a staff of just six to a team of more than 55 employees.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The best part is when I see someone receive a piece of rehab equipment that has a positive impact on their daily independence.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? When a client, who I had known since he was five years old, was able to get his driver's licence. We got him a vehicle with hand controls, spinner knobs and other adaptations so that he could drive. We were all so proud and emotional, and the excitement on his face was priceless.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Customer service is the key to success. Make eye contact and say hello, that means a lot to a lot of people.

What do you remember most about your first day on the job? I do a lot of problem solving and it's very rewarding when everything works out.
What is the best part of working at Sobeys? The Data Centre move to the Tahoe office was a proud moment. We ran dark fibre underneath the airport and transmitted data across, and everything went without a hitch. It was really exciting.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Rise to any challenge you're given the opportunity to rise to, that's how you get ahead. When you show people what you can do, and you're eager to do more, you'll be given more opportunities. This will grow your knowledge base and make you a more valuable person/asset on your team.

What is the best part of working at Sobeys? I love training the new employees, and I'm proud when they do well at our store or in other locations.
What is your proudest moment as a Sobeys employee? I was asked to be a coach in the HMR department to teach store managers and assistant managers about the new concept. It's a lot of fun.
What advice would you give to a new Sobeys employee? Treat customers the way you would like to be treated -- like family. Look at each customer as they come in the door, as if they were your parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends.
